Full Suspension Mountain Bikes

Overview Of Full Suspension Mountain Bikes

Early mountain bikes were termed fully rigid meaning the frame had a rigid fork and a fixed rear end with no suspension. In the early 1990s hard tail bikes were introduced that made it easier to ride on rough surfaces. These hard tails had suspension forks with up to 2 inches of travel.

Today, full suspension mountain bikes are widely available for cyclists. This design is often called dual suspension, which means they feature both front and rear suspensions. A design called soft tail has a rear suspension that employs the flex of the frame, but a true dual suspension has a linkage that lets the back wheel move on pivots.

Specialized mountain bikes are used in many different styles of biking. All disciplines may use full suspension mountain bikes, but the terrain actually dictates the best bikes to use. Full suspension bikes are often used in cross country riding, and they typically have pneumatic or coil shocks. They may weigh less than 22 pounds which is a definite advantage over heavier bikes in competition.

Downhill bikes with dual suspension are much faster on the steep race courses than other types of mountain bikes. Full suspension bikes are more comfortable and demonstrate better handling on rough terrain. Disadvantages include increased weight and higher prices.

There are many fine companies that manufacture full suspension mountain bikes. Trek mountain bikes have several Top Fuel models with either a red aluminum frame or a carbon crossbow frame. The Scapel dual suspension cross country bike is made by Cannondale bikes. It has won the world cup championship and placed second and third many times.

Scott bikes makes the lightest full suspension cycle on the market. The Mongoose Boot'R Team is also a good twin suspension bike. A dual suspension frame with 4 inches of rear travel can be found on the Saracen Vice 05.

For a better overall ride, full suspension mountain bikes are the best choice. The back wheel stays in contact with the ground surface to handle better on winding trails. Some of the first rear suspension designs were too heavy and susceptible to bobbing or lockout.

The development of the Horst Link suspension design solved these problems and is used by many bike manufacturers. The shock absorbing capability of dual suspension cannot be matched by any other types of bikes. Whether built of aluminum or steel, these bikes have a stylish design and give a comfortable ride.

Before you buy a full suspension mountain bike for competitive racing make sure you really need one. The extra weight they carry can really slow you down if you are mainly into cross country racing. The are a great benefit on downhill racing where the terrain is really rough, but watch out for the extra weight if you're doing some other kind of racing.
